Step 7: Monitoring and review

Finally, it is helpful to re-emphasise the importance of creating sustainable projects. Time should be dedicated to monitoring and reviewing the long term success of projects once operational.

A monitoring and review strategy will seek to:

  • compare a delivered project against its original vision and objectives
  • assess relative successes and failures in terms of uses and activities
  • identify benefits in terms of landscape and ecology
  • review socio-economic gains through the use of surveys and questionnaires
  • analyse successes and failures to identify lessons learnt.

Effective monitoring and review will help the long term sustainability of projects by identifying successes and prompt action to address problems or unsuccessful elements of a project. Critically, monitoring and review also offer an opportunity to learn from projects and to share experiences with partners, funders and other organisations and groups seeking to pursue similar solutions.
